Chennai: India cricketer Rinku Singh has left the national squad and returned home just two days before India’s important T20 World Cup Super 8 match against Zimbabwe. The development has created uncertainty in the Indian camp ahead of the must-win clash scheduled at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on February 26.

According to team sources, Rinku left the squad because of a family emergency. He also missed the team’s latest practice session. At present, there is no official confirmation on when he will rejoin the team or whether he will be available for the Zimbabwe match.

India are under pressure after suffering a heavy 76-run defeat against South Africa in their previous Super 8 encounter. With qualification for the semi-finals now uncertain, every remaining match has become extremely important for the team.

Sudden departure

Rinku’s sudden departure has forced the team management to rethink their plans for the upcoming match. The left-handed batter usually plays lower down the order and has had limited opportunities in the tournament so far.

In the match against South Africa, Rinku did get a chance to bat but was dismissed for a duck. At that stage, India were trying to reduce the losing margin, but his early dismissal added to the team’s struggles.

Because of his limited role in the playing XI, there were already discussions about possible changes in the batting order. His absence now makes the situation more complicated for the team think-tank.

Officials have not revealed the nature of the family emergency, and the team is giving the player full privacy. Whether he returns before the Zimbabwe game will depend entirely on his personal situation back home.

If Rinku is unable to come back in time, India may consider a replacement option in the squad. However, no official decision has been announced yet.

Possible team changes

With Rinku unavailable for practice and his participation uncertain, wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson is likely to return to the playing XI. Team management is reportedly considering using Samson in the top order to strengthen the batting lineup.

There is also talk that Samson could be asked to open the innings. This move may help India counter the strategy used by opponents who have been starting with off-spin bowling against Indian openers.

Another likely change involves all-rounder Axar Patel. He was surprisingly left out of the previous match, where Washington Sundar was preferred. Reports suggest Axar could return to provide better balance to the side with both bat and ball.

India’s path to the semi-finals has become difficult after the loss to South Africa and West Indies’ big win over Zimbabwe. The team now not only needs to win its remaining Super 8 matches against Zimbabwe and West Indies but also improve its net run rate significantly.

The match against Zimbabwe at the MA Chidambaram Stadium is therefore extremely important. A convincing victory is essential to keep India’s knockout hopes alive.

Team management and fans will closely watch updates on Rinku’s situation over the next 48 hours. If he returns in time, India may still include him depending on team combination. If not, the selectors and captain will have to finalise a revised playing XI.

For now, the Indian camp remains focused on preparation while also hoping that Rinku’s family situation improves soon. His explosive finishing ability has often been valuable for India, and the team would certainly prefer to have him available for the crucial stage of the tournament.

The coming days will decide whether Rinku rejoins the squad or India moves ahead with a reshuffled lineup for the high-pressure clash in Chennai.
