Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan has paid a heartfelt tribute to head coach Jonathan Trott ahead of his final game in charge of the national team. Trott will step down as Afghanistan coach after their last group-stage match against Canada in the T20 World Cup 2026.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference in Chennai, Rashid praised Trott’s huge contribution to Afghanistan cricket. He said the team will deeply miss his presence and leadership in the dressing room.
Trott, a former England international cricketer, played a key role in transforming Afghanistan from underdogs into serious competitors on the world stage. Under his guidance, the team made remarkable progress in both ODI and T20 cricket.
When Jonathan Trott took charge of Afghanistan, the team was still trying to find consistency at the highest level. Over time, he helped build a strong and confident unit that could compete against top cricketing nations.
One of the biggest achievements under his coaching came during the 2023 ODI World Cup. Afghanistan narrowly missed out on a semi-final spot but impressed fans and experts with their fearless cricket. The team showed that they were no longer just participants but real challengers.
They made an even stronger statement in the 2024 T20 World Cup, which was co-hosted by the West Indies and the USA. Afghanistan reached the semi-finals of that tournament, marking a historic moment for the country’s cricket. That performance firmly established them as a rising force in world cricket.
Trott was initially expected to step down after the 2024 tournament. However, leaving at that stage would have meant walking away from a team that was still growing and improving. Despite receiving offers from various franchise teams, he chose to continue working with Afghanistan and complete his mission.
Now, after Afghanistan’s group-stage exit in the T20 World Cup 2026, Trott is finally set to move on. His last match as coach will be against Canada.
Rashid Khan did not hold back in expressing his gratitude. He said the team has shared “unbelievable games and tours” with Trott. According to him, the coach worked extremely hard with every player and helped the team move in the right direction.
Rashid said Trott played a major role in shaping the team’s mindset and improving their overall performance. He added that everyone in the squad will miss him very much.
The captain also mentioned that Afghanistan has a busy schedule ahead, including a series against Sri Lanka and then the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, the immediate focus remains on giving Trott a fitting farewell in his final match.
During the press conference, Rashid Khan was also asked about the future of senior all-rounder Mohammad Nabi. For several years, there has been speculation about Nabi’s retirement from international cricket.
Now 41 years old, Nabi continues to play an important role in the team. When asked about whether Nabi might retire soon, Rashid gave a balanced and respectful response.
He said that every player knows himself better than anyone else and must decide when the right time to retire is. Rashid made it clear that retirement is a personal decision and depends on how long a player continues to enjoy the game.
He also praised Nabi’s fitness and performance. Rashid said that Nabi is still fit, contributes well to the team, and even runs and fields better than some of the younger players in the squad. According to him, Nabi still has cricket left in him.
Rashid shared his own view as well. He said that as long as he enjoys playing cricket, he will continue. But once that enjoyment fades, he would not see himself playing anymore. His comments showed respect for senior players while also highlighting the importance of passion for the game.
As Afghanistan prepares to play Canada, emotions are running high in the camp. The match will not change their position in the tournament, but it carries special importance as it marks the end of Jonathan Trott’s coaching journey with the team.
Over the past few years, Afghanistan cricket has taken huge steps forward. From missing out narrowly in major tournaments to reaching semi-finals and competing strongly against top teams, the progress has been clear.
Much of that growth has been linked to Trott’s guidance and the leadership of Rashid Khan. As the team moves into a new phase, they will carry forward the lessons and standards set during Trott’s time in charge.
For now, the focus is on giving their coach a memorable farewell. Whether it is Trott’s final game or the future decisions of players like Mohammad Nabi, Afghanistan cricket continues to evolve with confidence and ambition.
