Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday warmly welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron to India for a high-level three-day visit. The visit is seen as very important for both countries, as they look to deepen their strategic partnership and expand cooperation in many sectors.
President Macron arrived in Mumbai earlier in the day at the invitation of PM Modi. Soon after his arrival, both leaders shared friendly messages on social media, showing the strong personal bond between them. PM Modi said that India is delighted to host Macron and is ready to give new momentum to the India-France strategic partnership. He expressed confidence that their discussions would strengthen cooperation in different sectors and contribute to global progress.
Macron also posted a message before leaving for India. He said he was travelling with business leaders and representatives from economic, industrial, cultural, and digital sectors. He added that these people give real and practical shape to the relationship between India and France. Macron said the goal of the visit is to take the strategic partnership even further.
The two leaders are scheduled to meet in Mumbai for detailed talks on a wide range of bilateral issues. Their discussions are expected to cover defence, trade, technology, innovation, and global challenges.
President Macron received a warm welcome at Mumbai airport. He was greeted by Maharashtra Governor Acharya Devvrat and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar were also present at the airport to welcome the French leader.
Later in the day, Macron is scheduled to meet PM Modi at Lok Bhavan in South Mumbai for bilateral discussions. The meeting is expected to begin around 3:15 pm. During this meeting, the two leaders will review the progress made under the India-France strategic partnership and explore new areas for cooperation.
The talks are likely to focus on strengthening strategic collaboration while expanding engagement in emerging sectors such as advanced technology, digital innovation, clean energy, and supply chains. Both leaders are also expected to discuss regional and global issues, including developments in the Indo-Pacific region and other international matters.
Defence cooperation will be a major highlight of the discussions. India and France share a strong defence partnership that has grown steadily over the years. Recently, India approved the procurement of 114 Rafale fighter jets from France under a government-to-government deal. This move is considered a major step in boosting defence ties between the two nations.
In addition, the two countries are holding the 6th Annual Defence Dialogue in Bengaluru. During this dialogue, the existing defence cooperation agreement is expected to be renewed for another decade. Officials are likely to focus on closer collaboration in air and maritime capabilities. These discussions are part of the ambitious Defence Industrial Roadmap agreed upon in 2024, which aims to promote joint development and production.

Following the meeting between Modi and Macron, around 12 agreements and memorandums of understanding (MoUs) are expected to be signed. These agreements will likely cover defence, trade, skills development, healthcare, and supply chains. The signing of these pacts shows that the partnership is expanding not only in strategic areas but also in economic and social sectors.
Trade and investment are important pillars of India-France relations. France is one of India’s key economic partners in Europe. Many French companies operate in India in sectors such as energy, transport, aerospace, and manufacturing. At the same time, Indian companies have invested in France, especially in the IT and digital sectors.
During this visit, business leaders from both countries are expected to explore new investment opportunities. The presence of industry representatives in Macron’s delegation highlights the importance of economic cooperation. Both countries want to create more jobs, encourage innovation, and strengthen supply chains.
Technology and innovation are also central to the partnership. India and France are working together in areas such as artificial intelligence, space research, and renewable energy. Climate change and sustainable development are shared priorities for both nations. They are likely to discuss ways to promote green technologies and reduce carbon emissions.
The strong personal relationship between Modi and Macron has helped deepen the partnership over the years. Both leaders have met several times at global forums and during bilateral visits. Their regular interactions have built trust and mutual respect.
This visit is seen as an opportunity to take the relationship to the next level. By reviewing past achievements and signing new agreements, both sides aim to give fresh energy to their strategic partnership.
As global challenges continue to evolve, India and France appear committed to working closely together. From defence and trade to technology and global governance, the two countries are expanding their cooperation in many directions.
President Macron’s three-day visit, covering Mumbai and New Delhi, reflects the importance France places on its relationship with India. With strong political support at the highest level, India-France ties are set to reach new heights in the coming years.
