The 77th Republic Day was celebrated with great patriotic enthusiasm by the Income Tax Department at Aayakar Bhawan, Sector 17-E, Chandigarh, on 26th January 2026. The event was graced by Shri Ashok Kumar Saroha, IRS, Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, North West Region, Chandigarh, as the Chief Guest. Shri Jeev Milkha Singh, famous Indian golfer, Padam Shri & Arjuna Awardee also graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour. Shri Ashok Kumar Saroha unfurled the national flag, marking the beginning of the celebrations.
A vibrant cultural program followed, featuring performances by children of the department’s officials as well as students from Gurukul Global School and Shivalik Public School. The program included patriotic poems, group dances, and songs, which paid homage to the sacrifices of soldiers, freedom fighters, and national leaders. Through their performances, the children commemorated the adoption of the Constitution of India and the country’s transition to a republic, while also emphasizing the values of universal brotherhood and celebrating India’s rich diversity.
In his Republic Day address, Shri Ashok Kumar Saroha IRS highlighted the pivotal role of the Income Tax Department in nation-building. He encouraged officers and officials of the Department to continue their dedicated efforts in tax collection and service delivery. Further, Shri Ashok Kumar Saroha, IRS highlighted the importance of the Income Tax Department as the architect of fiscal foundation of the nation. He also mentioned the various reforms in the Income Tax Department which have ensured the improved service delivery along with reinforced ethical foundations. He also informed the gathering that out of a total budget collection target of Rs. 1 lakh crore (approx.) of the North West Region, the department has already collected 73%. The Chief Guest commended the children’s performances and inspired them to grow into responsible and exemplary citizens.
Sh. Jeev Milkha Singh, in his speech, motivated the audience by talking about his life experiences and highlighting the pivotal role played by his parents in shaping him as an individual and as a sportsperson. The Department also felicitated the sportspersons who are working as Income Tax employees who had achieved medals/honours at the International & National level in their respective sporting events. The winners of the Sports event organized from 21st January to 23rd January for the officers and officials of the department were also felicitated. A photo booth, themed around the Tricolor, added a vibrant touch to the celebrations, drawing enthusiastic participation from the audience.
The celebrations concluded on a high note, leaving everyone present imbued with a sense of patriotism and pride in the nation.
