The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, on Wednesday officially inaugurated its new academic session for 2026 at the NINE Auditorium. The event welcomed 350 resident doctors who joined the institute from July 2025 and January 2026. During the ceremony, these young doctors took a pledge administered by Dr RK Ratho, Dean of Academics, promising dedication to medical ethics and patient care.

The occasion was graced by Padma Shri awardee Ajeet Bajaj, a renowned mountaineer, adventurer, and motivational speaker, who attended as the chief guest. His daughter, Deeya Bajaj, an accomplished mountaineer and the guest of honour, also participated. The father-daughter duo has the rare distinction of being the first Asian pair to complete the Seven Summits, including Mount Everest. Their achievements in mountaineering have inspired many across the country.

During her address to the young doctors, most of whom were female, Deeya Bajaj highlighted the importance of gender equality and empowerment. She urged everyone to support and encourage girls, saying, “If we support our girls, nourish them, and show them that there is absolutely nothing they cannot achieve—and keep reinforcing this through encouragement and action—we are headed towards an absolutely amazing and fantastic future.” Deeya also shared her experiences of climbing Mount Everest with her father, emphasizing how perseverance, teamwork, and courage can lead to extraordinary achievements.

Message of responsibility and excellence for young doctors

PGIMER director, Dr Vivek Lal, also addressed the gathering, stressing the immense responsibility carried by medical professionals. “We are paratroopers in white coats. Everyone looks at us for hope, support, and mitigation of disease. Always remember the responsibility that comes with wearing this coat. You are going to be the spearhead of medical care in this institute for the next three years,” he said. He encouraged the young doctors to embrace their roles with dedication and to be proud of being a part of PGIMER.

Dr Lal emphasized that medical professionals not only provide treatment but also play a vital role in offering hope and reassurance to patients and their families. He reminded the doctors that their work has a direct impact on the well-being of society, and they must act with compassion, diligence, and ethical integrity.

The event also highlighted the importance of continuous learning and the value of mentorship. Both Ajeet and Deeya Bajaj spoke about the role of guidance and support in achieving difficult goals. Deeya’s message resonated particularly with female doctors, reinforcing the belief that they can excel in their careers and make significant contributions to healthcare and society.

Apart from inspiring young doctors, the ceremony provided a platform for them to interact with accomplished personalities like the Bajajs. The presence of experienced professionals and achievers offered practical advice and motivation, encouraging the residents to strive for excellence both academically and personally.

Dr Lal urged the residents to uphold the reputation of PGIMER by maintaining high standards of professionalism and dedication. He reminded them that their journey at the institute is not just about acquiring medical knowledge, but also about developing empathy, leadership, and a strong sense of responsibility.

Deeya Bajaj’s speech particularly highlighted the role of encouragement in shaping careers. She stressed that mentoring, guidance, and support for young girls and women in demanding fields like medicine can help them overcome challenges and achieve great heights. Her message aligned with the institute’s aim to foster an inclusive and empowering environment for all medical professionals.

The event concluded with the pledge ceremony, reinforcing the commitment of the resident doctors to their patients and to ethical medical practices. The new batch of doctors expressed their enthusiasm and determination to contribute positively to the institute and society. The ceremony was attended by senior faculty members, administrative officials, and other staff, making it a memorable and motivating start to the academic session.

PGIMER continues to focus on training competent, compassionate, and socially responsible medical professionals. The inauguration of the new academic session, with messages of empowerment, responsibility, and excellence, sets the tone for the upcoming year, inspiring young doctors to aim high and uphold the values of the institute.
