The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has appointed Baijayant Jay Panda as the election incharge for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. Along with him, the party also named Jammu and Kashmir MLA Sunil Kumar Sharma and former Union Minister Darshana Ben Jardosh as co-incharges. Panda, 61, is a five-time Member of Parliament (MP) from Odisha and currently serves as the BJP’s national vice president and spokesperson.
The party’s decision comes after Panda’s significant role in the 2024 Delhi Assembly elections, where he helped the BJP return to power after 27 years. The party won 48 out of 70 seats in Delhi, defeating the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Panda had quietly managed the campaign, focusing on highlighting AAP’s shortcomings, and his efforts were widely credited for the party’s victory in the national capital.

He was the BJP’s incharge for the 2021 Assam Assembly elections, where the party retained power for a second consecutive term, winning 60 out of 126 seats. However, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) faced a setback in Uttar Pradesh, winning only 33 out of 80 seats. The Samajwadi Party, led by Akhilesh Yadav, won 37 seats, while Congress managed six seats. Political analysts attributed the BJP’s performance in Uttar Pradesh to multiple factors, including the Samajwadi Party’s PDA formula, which helped it consolidate support.
Despite the Uttar Pradesh setback, Panda’s overall track record as a campaign strategist remains strong. His experience in managing elections in diverse regions such as Delhi and Assam gives him the expertise to handle complex electoral landscapes. The BJP leadership believes that his appointment in Assam will strengthen the party’s preparation for the 2026 Assembly elections.
