Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday strongly attacked the Samajwadi Party (SP) over the alleged codeine cough syrup nexus in the state. Speaking at a press conference in Lucknow, CM Yogi claimed that early findings of the investigation suggest links between the accused and leaders of the Samajwadi Party. He said the truth would come out fully as the probe moves forward.

Responding to a question, the Chief Minister said that people arrested by the Special Task Force (STF) and Uttar Pradesh Police have political connections. According to him, the investigation so far has pointed towards the involvement of SP-linked individuals in the illegal sale and smuggling of poisonous cough syrups. CM Yogi added that more revelations are expected in the coming days.

The Chief Minister also announced that a state-level Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the matter in depth. Officers from the Uttar Pradesh Police and the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) are part of this SIT. He said the team will examine every angle of the case, including financial transactions, supply chains, and political links.

CM Yogi said the SIT will identify who received money in the entire network and how the illegal operation was carried out. He stressed that no one involved would be spared, regardless of their political background. According to him, the investigation will bring complete transparency and expose all those connected to the nexus.

The Chief Minister also took a sharp jibe at Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav during the press conference. Using a poetic line in Hindi, CM Yogi said that his government keeps cleaning the mirror so that the dust on faces becomes visible. The remark was clearly aimed at the SP leadership and its alleged role in the case.

He further said that action was taken after several complaints were received about poisonous cough syrups being sold at different locations in the state. These syrups were reportedly harmful and posed a serious risk to public health. CM Yogi said multiple arrests were made after the complaints were verified.

According to the Chief Minister, there were also reports of large-scale smuggling of the cough syrup within Uttar Pradesh. He said the state government acted swiftly to stop the illegal trade and successfully curbed the smuggling network. CM Yogi added that strict action was taken to ensure that such dangerous products do not reach people again.

Investigation and arrests so far

CM Yogi said that the arrests made in the case were the result of coordinated action by the STF, Uttar Pradesh Police, and other agencies. He stated that the accused were involved in the illegal manufacture, distribution, and sale of codeine-based cough syrups without proper approval.

He explained that these syrups were sold in violation of drug safety rules and were being misused. The Chief Minister said that selling such substances is not only illegal but also dangerous for society, especially for young people.

The SIT, he said, is working to trace the entire supply chain. This includes identifying manufacturers, distributors, sellers, and middlemen involved in the network. CM Yogi assured that the investigation will be thorough and time-bound.

He also said the FSDA’s role is crucial in checking drug quality, licensing, and compliance with safety standards. The department is examining how such harmful syrups entered the market and who allowed their sale.

CM Yogi said that the state government is committed to maintaining law and order and protecting public health. He added that such crimes will be dealt with firmly and transparently.

Other key issues raised by CM Yogi

Apart from the cough syrup case, CM Yogi also spoke about the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly Winter Session. He said that a special discussion will be held to mark 150 years of the song “Vande Mataram.” According to him, this will be an important and meaningful discussion in the House.

He said that during an all-party meeting held on Thursday, the government made it clear that it is ready to discuss every issue raised by the opposition. CM Yogi added that constructive debate is essential for democracy and the government is open to all viewpoints.

The Chief Minister also spoke about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Uttar Pradesh. He said the revision is extremely important to ensure fairness and transparency in elections. According to him, nearly three-fourths of the work related to SIR has already been completed in the state.

CM Yogi said that voter list revision helps remove fake, duplicate, and ineligible names, which strengthens democracy. He added that the process is being carried out carefully and responsibly.

In conclusion, CM Yogi reiterated that his government will continue to act firmly against illegal activities and corruption. He said that the cough syrup case will be fully exposed through the SIT investigation and those found guilty will face strict legal action.
