It was a heartwarming morning at the Chandigarh airport as Indian women’s cricket stars Amanjot Kaur and Harleen Deol returned home after their historic Women’s World Cup win. Their flight from New Delhi landed early on Friday, and waiting among the crowd was Amanjot’s father, Bhupinder Singh, whose eyes filled with tears of pride and emotion. For Bhupinder, the wait had been long and anxious—not just because he missed his daughter, but because Amanjot’s grandmother had suffered two heart attacks during the tournament.

As soon as Amanjot stepped out of the terminal, she spotted her father, rushed to him, and embraced him tightly. Her first question was about her grandmother’s health, showing how deeply she cared for her family even in the middle of her sporting success. The reunion was emotional and joyful at the same time, as friends, relatives, and fans surrounded them, cheering for the local heroes.

Amanjot’s father said that the past few weeks had been full of mixed emotions. “We were all praying for the team’s victory, but my mother’s health was always on my mind. Seeing Amanjot come back safe and victorious feels like a blessing,” he shared with a smile. The moment captured both the pride of a father and the warmth of a daughter returning home after achieving something special for her country.

Fans, officials and coach celebrate the champions

Hundreds of fans had gathered outside the airport, waving posters and holding garlands to celebrate Amanjot and Harleen’s return. Both players were part of India’s World Cup-winning squad that defeated South Africa by 52 runs in the final, bringing glory to the nation. The sound of dhol, the flutter of tricolour flags, and the chants of “India! India!” filled the air as the two cricketers stepped out.

Among those who came to welcome them were Punjab’s finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema, MP Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, and MLA Dr Amandeep Kaur Arora. They honoured both players with shawls and bouquets, calling them inspirations for young girls across the country. “Their success has made Punjab and India proud. We will continue to support women in sports with full dedication,” said Cheema.

Amanjot’s coach, Nagesh Gupta, was also present to greet his student. Watching her lift the World Cup had been a proud moment for him. “She has worked hard for years and never gave up, even when things got difficult. Seeing her return as a world champion is a dream come true for all of us,” he said. Amanjot’s early mentor, Deepinder Chabra, who had first recommended her to Nagesh, also received special mention from her.

The joy of victory was still fresh for the players. “It is unbelievable to receive such a rousing welcome back home,” said Amanjot, smiling through the crowd. “We didn’t sleep after our semi-final win against Australia because we were so thrilled. Even after the final, the celebrations continued all night. The feeling of holding that trophy is something I can never forget.”

She also shared how this victory was not just about cricket but about faith and teamwork. “Every player gave her best, and our unity made the difference. I’m grateful to my coach for his guidance and to my family for their endless support. Knowing that my grandmother is now recovering well makes this win even more special,” she added.

Harleen Deol echoed similar sentiments, expressing her gratitude to the fans. “We play for the tricolour and for moments like these,” she said. “Coming home to this love is beyond words.”

Both players will soon join local events organised by the Punjab government and sports associations to celebrate the Indian women’s team’s remarkable achievement. Plans are also underway to hold felicitation ceremonies in Mohali and Chandigarh to honour the cricketers who made the nation proud.

The homecoming of Amanjot and Harleen marked more than just a victory celebration—it became a symbol of dedication, family bonds, and dreams fulfilled. From local grounds to the world stage, their journey stands as a reminder that passion and perseverance can take one to the highest level. As the two walked through the cheering crowd, their smiles spoke of the pride of representing India and the happiness of returning home to those who had believed in them all along.
