The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) election results for 2025 were announced on Thursday, November 6. The Left Unity alliance won all the key positions, keeping JNU a stronghold of left-leaning student groups.

Left Unity candidates Aditi Mishra, K Gopika, Sunil Yadav, and Danish Ali won the posts of President, Vice President, General Secretary, and Joint Secretary, respectively. Aditi Mishra won the President post by 414 votes, K Gopika won the Vice President post by 1,236 votes, Sunil Yadav won the General Secretary post by 74 votes, and Danish Ali won the Joint Secretary post by 229 votes.

This year, a total of twenty students were contesting for the four main posts. For the President post, seven students were in the race, including Aditi Mishra from Left Unity, Vikas Patel from ABVP, Vikash Bishnoi from NSUI, Raj Ratan Rajoria from BAPSA, Shinde Vijayalaxmi from Progressive Students’ Association, Shirshava Indu from DISHA, and Angad Singh as an independent candidate. For the Vice President post, the main contestants were Left Unity’s K Gopika Babu, NSUI’s Shaikh Shahnawaz Alam, and ABVP’s Tanya Kumari.

Left Unity is an alliance of All India Students’ Association (AISA), Students’ Federation of India (SFI), and Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF). The Left has traditionally been strong at JNU and has won most of the elections since the first JNUSU polls in 1971.

Election details and voter turnout

The election was held on November 4 in two sessions. The first session ran from 9 am to 1 pm, and the second session was from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. This year, the voter turnout was 67 percent, a small drop from last year’s 70 percent.

Counting of votes started early on November 6 and continued throughout the day. Left Unity quickly took the lead in all four posts. Aditi Mishra led for President, K Gopika for Vice President, Sunil Yadav for General Secretary, and Danish Ali for Joint Secretary. ABVP, the student wing of RSS, was the main competitor but could not win any key posts this year.

Left Unity celebrated their victory on campus after the results were announced. There was a small scuffle between some Left Unity members, but security quickly controlled the situation.

Last year, the Left alliance had won three of the top four posts, while ABVP had won the Joint Secretary post after ten years. This year, Left regained all posts, showing their continuing dominance at JNU.

Background and historical context

JNUSU elections have always been closely watched. The Left has traditionally been strong at JNU, with groups like SFI and AISA winning many times. In the past, ABVP and NSUI have also won certain positions, but the Left remains dominant overall.

The first JNUSU election was held in 1971, and the Left won the President post that year. Since then, Left groups have largely controlled the students’ union, except in 1991 when NSUI won and in 2000 when ABVP won the President post. Over the years, the Left alliance has continued to maintain its stronghold, often winning the majority of the main positions.

The 2025 elections were a test of this dominance. Students closely followed the contest between Left Unity and ABVP. The victory by Left Unity in all four key posts shows their continued influence and popularity among JNU students.

Conclusion

The JNUSU 2025 election results show that Left Unity remains very strong at Jawaharlal Nehru University. With Aditi Mishra as President, K Gopika as Vice President, Sunil Yadav as General Secretary, and Danish Ali as Joint Secretary, Left Unity now holds all the main positions in the students’ union.

These results confirm JNU’s reputation as a left-leaning campus. ABVP, despite being a strong competitor, could not secure any key post this year. Students and political observers are likely to watch the coming year closely to see how Left Unity governs and whether any changes occur before the next election.
