The Haryana Police leadership has called upon all officers and staff members to come forward and help the family of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sandeep Lather, who allegedly ended his life earlier this month. A communication issued by the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) and the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Rohtak has asked personnel of all ranks to contribute voluntarily to the family’s welfare fund.
According to official sources, ASI Sandeep Kumar, who was posted in the Cyber Cell of Rohtak district, passed away on October 14 under tragic circumstances. His sudden demise has left his family — which includes his mother, wife, two daughters, and a son — in a difficult financial situation. Two of his children are minors, and all three are still studying.
The DGP’s message to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Rohtak Range, described Sandeep as a “sincere and dedicated officer” who had made a strong mark in the department through his commitment and excellent performance. It added that his work in solving several crime cases had brought recognition to the force. He was even honoured by the Chief Minister on the 79th Independence Day for his exceptional service.
The DGP stated that the family now needs urgent financial help and urged that all police officials across districts and units be informed and encouraged to contribute voluntarily. The collected donations, as per the directive, will be deposited into the Police Welfare Fund of Rohtak district and then used to provide relief to the bereaved family.
Following the DGP’s appeal, the office of the Rohtak Superintendent of Police issued another communique elaborating on the contribution structure. The letter underlined that the family of the deceased officer was in need of financial assistance and that it was the moral responsibility of every member of the police force to come forward and help.
The communique listed the suggested contribution amounts for each rank of the force. As per the schedule, Indian Police Service (IPS) officers are expected to contribute ₹3,000 each, Gazetted Officers ₹2,500, Inspectors ₹2,000, Sub-Inspectors ₹1,800, ASIs ₹1,500, personnel of other ranks ₹1,000, and Class IV employees ₹300.
Officials clarified that these amounts are voluntary in nature, meant to encourage a collective gesture of solidarity within the police department. The administration has also made it clear that any official who has objections to the proposed contribution, or who is unable to pay the suggested amount for any reason, should inform the Accounts Branch by October 25.
The SP’s communication further highlighted the importance of compassion and unity within the police force, particularly in times when one of their own families faces hardship. The appeal reminded officers that helping the family of a colleague who dedicated his life to service is both a moral and social responsibility.

Sources within the police department shared that many officers had expressed their condolences to ASI Sandeep Lather’s family and described him as a hardworking, calm, and cooperative officer who maintained discipline and integrity throughout his service. His work in the Cyber Cell was recognised for its effectiveness in tracing online crimes and assisting in several important investigations.
Senior officials in Rohtak have stated that apart from financial support, the department is also exploring ways to provide educational assistance to the children of the late officer. Discussions are underway to see if scholarships or other welfare schemes can be extended to ensure that his children continue their education without interruption.
The welfare contribution drive has also reminded officers of the importance of mental health and emotional well-being among police personnel. Several senior officers have reportedly emphasised that while financial support is crucial, the department should also strengthen internal mechanisms for counselling and psychological care to prevent such tragedies in the future.
The tragic loss of ASI Sandeep Lather has deeply saddened the Rohtak police community. Officers have pledged to stand by the bereaved family and ensure that they receive timely support. The appeal from the DGP and SP has been received positively, and the collection of funds is already underway in several units.
By launching this voluntary contribution initiative, the Haryana Police leadership aims not only to extend immediate financial aid but also to reinforce the spirit of unity, empathy, and shared responsibility within the force. The move reflects the department’s commitment to standing together in times of personal and professional crisis — ensuring that no police family faces hardship alone.
