Himachal Pradesh continued to experience wet and cold weather on Wednesday, with rain in many areas and snowfall in the state’s higher regions. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Shimla office, light to moderate rain was observed at most places over the last 24 hours. Some isolated areas received heavy to very heavy rain. Snowfall was reported in higher reaches, adding to the wintry conditions in parts of the state.
Several regions recorded significant snowfall. Gondla reported 30 cm of snow, Keylong 15 cm, Hansa 5 cm, and Kukumseri 3.2 cm. These snowfall levels made the roads slippery and challenging for travelers, especially in the tribal district of Lahaul-Spiti. The coldest places recorded negative temperatures, with Kukumseri hitting -2.5 degrees Celsius and Keylong recording -2.1 degrees Celsius. IMD officials noted that maximum temperatures were below normal by 7-14 degrees at most stations, while minimum temperatures were 5-6 degrees lower than normal at certain locations.
The state also witnessed rainfall in lower and mid-hill areas. Naina Devi recorded the highest rainfall at 13 cm, followed by Solan with 12 cm. Other stations like Barthin and Pachhad received 8 cm each, Kasauli and Bilaspur Sadar 7 cm each, Kahu and Dharampur 6 cm, and Nagrota Surian 5 cm. Shimla Aero, Karsog, Jogindarnagar, Shimla, Palampur, and Mandi recorded rain between 3 to 4 cm. These rains contributed to landslides and waterlogging in some low-lying areas, creating difficulties for daily commuters.
IMD officials predict that light to moderate rain or snowfall may continue in isolated locations on October 9 and 10, especially in higher altitudes. However, dry weather is likely to prevail from October 11 onwards. This improvement in weather is expected to make travel easier and reduce the risk of waterlogging and landslides in lower and mid-hill regions.
Temperatures are also expected to rise gradually over the next few days. Maximum temperatures may increase by 6-10 degrees Celsius over the next 4-5 days, bringing some relief from the current cold wave. Minimum temperatures are expected to rise slightly by 2-4 degrees Celsius over the next 3-4 days, though there will be little change in the immediate 24-hour period. The rise in temperature will help thaw snow in certain regions, making roads safer for vehicles and pedestrians.

The combination of recent rains and snowfall has created picturesque scenes in the state, with snow-covered roads and hills attracting tourists and photographers. In places like Sissu in Lahaul-Spiti, residents and visitors have been seen riding motorcycles and walking on snow-covered roads, enjoying the winter scenery despite the cold. Authorities, however, advise caution, as heavy snowfall and icy roads can be dangerous for travel.
With the dry spell expected to set in by October 11, the state is likely to see better weather for outdoor activities, tourism, and local businesses. Farmers in the region may also benefit from a short dry period to manage crops and prepare for upcoming winter conditions. Local authorities continue to monitor weather conditions closely and issue advisories for travelers and residents in vulnerable areas.
Overall, while Himachal Pradesh has faced a mix of rainfall, snowfall, and low temperatures over the past few days, conditions are expected to improve soon, offering relief from the extreme cold and wet weather. Residents and tourists can anticipate clearer skies, rising temperatures, and safer travel conditions in the coming week.
