Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath launched the “Viksit Uttar Pradesh @2047 Mission” in Lucknow, aiming to make the state a developed and strong part of India’s growth journey. Speaking at Lok Bhawan, he highlighted the economic progress made by the state in the last eight years and urged people to actively participate in shaping Uttar Pradesh’s future. The CM described the mission not just as a government programme, but as a shared vision for every citizen.
During his address, CM Yogi Adityanath underlined how Uttar Pradesh has transformed since 2017. Once labelled as a “sick state” or “bimaru state,” it has now become the second-largest economy in India. He shared figures to show this progress – the state’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) has risen sharply from ₹13 lakh crore in 2017 to ₹35 lakh crore today.
The CM explained that Uttar Pradesh was once the backbone of India’s economy. Between 1947 and 1960, it contributed nearly 14 percent to the national GDP, making it the country’s largest economy at that time. With fertile land and agriculture as its main strength, the state had a leading role. But over the decades, it slipped in rank and by 2017 was only at the eighth position in the Indian economy, contributing just 8 percent to the national GDP. This fall created an identity crisis for the people of Uttar Pradesh, with many across India carrying a negative impression about the state.
Yogi Adityanath credited the policies of the last eight years for reversing this trend. He said that today, Uttar Pradesh is among the fastest-growing economies of the country and will soon play a major part in helping India become the third-largest economy in the world by 2027.
One of the important steps taken by the state government was the One District One Product (ODOP) scheme, started in 2018. This scheme gave recognition to local MSME products, connected them to technology and design, and helped in creating markets for them. As a result, artisans and craftsmen found new confidence and better opportunities. Exports from Uttar Pradesh have now touched ₹2 lakh crore, with MSMEs contributing the most to this success.
The CM also remembered the challenges during the Covid pandemic. He said that when lakhs of migrant workers and artisans returned to the state, the government provided shelter and food to more than one crore people. Out of these, 40 lakh were from Uttar Pradesh itself, while nearly 30 lakh had come from states like Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, and Assam. Yogi Adityanath said that in those difficult times, the administration stood with people like a family, and many beneficiaries expressed their gratitude for this support.
The CM made it clear that the mission cannot succeed without the active participation of people. He invited suggestions from every section of society – farmers, women, youth, professionals, and institutions. He said that citizens can share their ideas through workshops, town halls, social media, short videos, and the Viksit Uttar Pradesh Portal.
He reminded the audience that India once contributed almost 25 percent to the world economy during the 16th century. According to him, India must aim to reclaim that position, and Uttar Pradesh, with its large population, fertile land, cultural richness, and skilled manpower, can play a leading role in achieving this dream.
Deputy Chief Ministers also praised the progress of the state. Keshav Prasad Maurya said that the last eight years have brought “unprecedented changes” to Uttar Pradesh. Brajesh Pathak added that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and CM Yogi, the state has built a stronger governance system and seen a rise in per capita income.

Senior cabinet ministers including Swatantra Dev Singh and Surya Pratap Shahi, along with government officials, were also present at the launch event.
In his closing remarks, CM Yogi Adityanath emphasised that “every village, every ward and every citizen must join hands” to make this mission successful. He called the mission a collective resolve of 140 crore Indians and encouraged people to view it as their own journey, not just a government programme.
With this initiative, the Uttar Pradesh government hopes to continue the state’s growth momentum, improve quality of life for its citizens, and make the state a model of development by 2047 – the year when India celebrates 100 years of independence.
