Every year on August 29, India celebrates National Sports Day to honor the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. Known as one of the greatest hockey players in history, Dhyan Chand brought glory to India during its golden era of Olympic hockey. His birthday is now marked as a day to encourage fitness, promote sports, and inspire the nation to stay active.

Major Dhyan Chand was born in 1905. His incredible skills on the hockey field made him a global icon. Between 1928 and 1936, he led India to three consecutive Olympic gold medals. Even after his retirement, his influence was so strong that India continued to dominate hockey, winning gold medals in 1948, 1952, and 1956, and again in 1964. His legacy is remembered not only in hockey but also in India’s broader sporting culture.

Theme of national sports day 2025

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has announced that the Fit India Mission will lead the celebrations this year. The theme is centered around a campaign called “Ek Ghanta, Khel ke Maidan Main” (One hour on the playground). The campaign runs from August 29 to 31 and encourages citizens to spend at least 60 minutes a day on physical activity.

The aim of this movement is to fight lifestyle-related diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and heart problems by making fitness a part of daily life. According to a statement released by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the campaign is designed to spread awareness about how just one hour of exercise daily can improve health and prevent illnesses.

This campaign is not only about sports but also about everyday activities like walking, cycling, or playing any outdoor game. By promoting such simple steps, the government hopes to build a healthier and more active society.

History and celebrations of national sports day

National Sports Day was officially celebrated for the first time in 2012. Since then, it has been observed every year to remind the country of the role sports play in shaping national identity, encouraging teamwork, and building discipline. It is also a day to honor athletes who have made India proud with their achievements.

In earlier years, National Sports Day was also the occasion for the National Sports Awards. However, for 2025, these awards were already presented earlier on January 17. Despite this, August 29 remains the main day for promoting sports and fitness across the country.

This year, the government confirmed that athletes, public representatives, and sports enthusiasts will participate in activities across India. From state capitals to district towns, playgrounds and stadiums will see special events. Eminent sportspersons will encourage citizens to step out and take part in games and exercises. The idea is to spread the message that sports are not just for professionals but for everyone, regardless of age.

A day to inspire the nation

National Sports Day is more than just a tribute to Major Dhyan Chand. It is also a reminder of how important sports and fitness are for the country’s future. In today’s world, where many people spend hours sitting in offices or at home, this day encourages everyone to move, play, and stay fit.

Children are especially encouraged to participate in sports to build healthy habits early in life. Schools, colleges, and community centers organize matches, races, fitness sessions, and awareness drives. Meanwhile, government bodies and private organizations also join in, making it a nationwide movement.

By linking Major Dhyan Chand’s legacy with modern campaigns like the Fit India Mission, National Sports Day brings together history and health. It connects India’s sporting past with its vision for a healthier and stronger future.
