Getting a flower from someone special is always a sweet and emotional moment. But real flowers don’t last forever. No matter how carefully you press them into a book, they eventually dry out or fade away.

Now, a new trend is catching on—crochet ‘forever’ flowers. These flowers are made using yarn and a hook, by hand, with lots of care. They don’t dry up, and they never wilt.

From roses and sunflowers to lilies and tulips, crochet flowers are available in many designs and colours. They can be gifted on birthdays, anniversaries, or just to say "I'm thinking of you."

Crochet artist Vishwa, founder of Rare You, says that these flowers are not just pretty gifts, they’re symbols of love and memory. "They last for years and remind people of the care behind the gesture," she says.

Another artist, Swetha of Happy Yarn Loops, adds that people love handmade items today because they feel more personal and meaningful. Crochet flowers can be customised to match someone’s favourite colour or flower. Some even come with a soft scent for a sensory touch.

According to Ananya Malhotra, founder of Enchanted Threads, crochet has become very popular in the last 4–5 years. "People want eco-friendly, long-lasting items. These flowers are perfect because they’re kind to the planet and full of emotion," she says.

Handmade gifts with lasting value

In today’s fast-moving world, many people want to make better choices. They are more aware of how much waste is created by fast fashion and short-lived gifts. Crochet offers a more thoughtful option.

Vishwa says crochet connects people with the past, as many of us remember our grandmothers making crochet scarves or sweaters. It brings nostalgia and warmth into our modern lives.

Crochet flowers are also a one-time investment. Unlike fresh flowers that die in a few days, crochet flowers last forever and don’t need any care. Swetha believes this makes them a smart choice, especially for the younger generation.

But while some think cost is a big factor, Ananya disagrees. She points out that high-quality crochet work is often more expensive than buying fresh flowers. What really draws people in is the emotional value.

"When you receive a crochet flower made especially for you, in your favourite colour and design, it shows that someone put in real time and effort," she explains. "It’s not just a gift—it’s a personal message of love."

Even though crochet flowers are gaining popularity, artists agree they’re not meant to replace real flowers. Instead, they offer a different kind of beauty.

"Real flowers are nature’s magic," says Vishwa. "Crochet flowers are handmade magic. Both have their own charm."

Swetha says, “You can have any flower you like, in any season, when it’s crocheted. That’s something real flowers can’t do.”

The big crochet comeback

Crochet is not limited to just flowers. Today, it is used in making clothes, rugs, toys, bags, and even decorations. The variety of yarns—from soft cotton to sparkly sequins—makes it easy to create stylish and colourful items.

But running a crochet business is not easy. Ananya has seen many small brands start but also fade away. "Good crochet work takes time and skill. There aren’t many trained artists, and prices have to be fair. Only a few brands survive in the long run," she says.

Still, the love for crochet is growing strong. People want gifts that last longer and mean more. Handmade crochet items bring joy not just to the person receiving them, but also to the artist who created them with care.

Whether it's a single flower or a full bouquet, crochet ‘forever’ flowers are here to stay. They’re proof that love, when stitched with patience and thought, can truly last a lifetime.
