Divya Deshmukh, a 19-year-old girl from Nagpur, has made the country proud by winning the FIDE Women’s Chess World Cup. With this win, she became the fourth Indian woman ever to earn the title of Grandmaster. Divya achieved this big milestone by defeating a very experienced Indian player, Koneru Humpy, in the final match of the tournament.
Her win did not come easily. The match was tough, and both players gave their best. However, in the later stages of the game, Humpy made a few mistakes. Divya took full advantage of these blunders and ended up winning the match and the title. Her calm mind and smart strategy helped her gain this remarkable victory.
Now, Divya Deshmukh is being praised across the country. Many people want to know more about her background and how she started her journey in chess. Interestingly, her entry into the world of chess happened by chance.
In an earlier interview, Divya shared that she had no plans to play chess as a child. She said, “My sister used to go to badminton classes. One day, my parents took me with her, but I was only four or five years old. I couldn’t even reach the badminton net. There was a chess class going on in the same building, so my parents took me there. I liked the game and decided to continue playing it.”
Divya Deshmukh was born in Nagpur, Maharashtra. Her parents, Jitendra and Namratha Deshmukh, are both doctors. Coming from a medical background, many believed she would also follow in their footsteps. But Divya chose her own path and decided to pursue chess seriously. She studied at Bhavans Bhagwandas Purohit Vidya Mandir school in Nagpur, where her love for the sport grew stronger.
Her hard work and talent began to show from a young age. She earned the title of Woman Grandmaster (WGM) in 2021 and soon became an International Master (IM). In 2022, she also won the Women’s Indian Chess Championship, proving her growing strength in the game.
Her recent win at the FIDE Women’s Chess World Cup has made her a national hero. With this achievement, Divya has joined the elite list of Indian women who have reached the top level in chess. Before her, only three Indian women had earned the Grandmaster title.
