Union Home Minister Amit Shah has praised Himachal Pradesh for promoting natural farming during a recent national-level meeting in New Delhi. He made these remarks during the ‘Manthan Baithak’ on co-operatives, which was attended by co-operative ministers from all Indian states. Shah said, “Himachal mein natural farming mein bahut achay experiments hue hain,” which means Himachal has done great work in natural farming.

According to a statement by the state government on Friday, Shah specially appreciated the efforts of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. He said that Himachal has taken the lead in this field and set a strong example for the rest of the country to follow. The minister also showed support for the state's policies that promote sustainable and chemical-free farming methods.

Chief Minister Sukhu also spoke about the growing interest in natural farming in Himachal. He said that more and more farmers and fruit growers (horticulturists) are shifting toward natural farming. Currently, over 2.23 lakh farmers in the state have started practicing chemical-free farming—either fully or partially. These farmers are spread across nearly every panchayat in the state, showing that the movement is reaching all corners of Himachal Pradesh.

State leads with MSP for natural farming crops

CM Sukhu shared more details about the steps being taken to support natural farming in Himachal. He said the state has become the first in India to offer Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops grown through natural methods. This move aims to encourage more farmers to switch to eco-friendly farming practices.

The chief minister added that the state government has set an ambitious target to connect 9.61 lakh farmers with natural farming in the coming years. The plan will be implemented in different phases so that farmers can receive proper training and support throughout the process.

Natural farming avoids the use of chemical fertilizers and harmful pesticides. Instead, it uses traditional and organic methods like compost, cow dung, and natural pesticides made from local herbs. This practice not only improves the quality of food but also protects the environment and soil health.

Both state and central leaders agree that Himachal’s success can inspire other states to adopt similar models. With government backing and growing awareness, Himachal’s natural farming mission is expected to expand rapidly in the near future.
