The Uttarakhand Meteorological Department has issued an ‘orange alert’ warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in six districts of the state on Monday. The warning also includes the possibility of lightning strikes and strong winds in several areas. The alert has prompted officials to take precautionary measures, including the closure of schools and Anganwadi centres in Dehradun.
The districts that are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall include Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Nainital, Champawat, and Udham Singh Nagar. The State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) has reported that the weather department has predicted severe weather conditions in these areas. This includes the possibility of thunderstorms, lightning, and winds that may cause damage if precautions are not taken.
The SEOC has sent formal letters to all concerned district magistrates, instructing them to remain vigilant. They have been directed to prepare for any emergency situation and ensure that precautionary steps are implemented on time to avoid any major mishaps.
In response to the orange alert, Dehradun District Magistrate Savin Bansal issued an order to close all schools and Anganwadi centres from Classes 1 to 12 for Monday. The move has been taken to ensure the safety of students and staff as heavy rains often lead to waterlogging, traffic issues, and landslides in hilly areas.
The closure is a preventive step, as heavy rainfall can create hazardous conditions on roads and in low-lying areas. Parents have been advised to keep their children safe at home during the weather warning.
According to the meteorological department, the intensity of rainfall may vary from moderate to very heavy in some regions. There is a chance of continuous rain spells, which could lead to localised flooding, landslides, and damage to infrastructure in certain parts of the state. The weather office has specifically warned about lightning incidents, which can be fatal if proper safety measures are not followed.
The department has requested residents, especially in the six affected districts, to avoid unnecessary travel. People are advised to stay indoors during heavy rain and lightning. In case of emergencies, the public is urged to contact local authorities for assistance.

The State Emergency Operations Centre has alerted all district authorities to be fully prepared for any potential disaster-related situations. This includes ensuring that emergency response teams, medical units, and disaster relief forces are on standby. Rescue equipment has also been checked and positioned in sensitive areas.
District officials have been asked to monitor vulnerable locations, such as riverbanks, landslide-prone zones, and areas with poor drainage systems. The SEOC emphasised the importance of early warning systems and timely communication with local communities.
Heavy rainfall during the monsoon season has previously caused severe damage in Uttarakhand. Flash floods, landslides, and road blockages are common occurrences during this time of year. Officials fear that a similar situation could develop if the current weather conditions intensify.
The government has urged people living in flood-prone areas to remain alert and relocate temporarily if needed. Villagers near hilly slopes have also been told to be cautious as landslides can occur without warning.
Residents have been asked to stay away from swollen rivers, streams, and bridges. The administration has warned that even small water channels can become dangerous during heavy rain. Commuters are advised to check traffic updates before travelling, as several roads may face blockages due to falling debris or waterlogging.
The weather department has also advised avoiding open fields and tall trees during thunderstorms, as lightning strikes can be deadly. Mobile phones and electrical appliances should be handled with care during stormy weather to prevent accidents.
The meteorological department will continue to monitor the situation closely and issue updated forecasts as needed. Authorities are on alert and have assured that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure public safety.
For now, the orange alert remains in place for all six districts, and residents are encouraged to cooperate with local authorities. With proactive measures such as school closures and constant monitoring, the government aims to minimise risks during this period of adverse weather.
