Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for seven major medical infrastructure projects at King George's Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow. These projects are worth nearly Rs 1,000 crore. He praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership for the major improvements seen in India’s healthcare sector.

Important projects launched

The Chief Minister opened several new facilities at KGMU. These include the Centre for Orthopaedic Super Speciality, a new Cardiology Wing, and newly built upper floors of the New Guest House. He also laid the foundation stone for many important upcoming buildings such as:

Yogi Adityanath called KGMU one of the most respected medical institutions in India. Speaking at the event, he said the university has served humanity for more than 120 years. He highlighted that patients from across Uttar Pradesh, other nearby states, and even Nepal trust KGMU for treatment. He said people believe they will return home healthy after being treated here.
The Chief Minister praised KGMU for its strong response during two major health crises – one in the last century and the COVID-19 pandemic. He said it was the first institute in the state to start COVID testing and acted as a key front-line institution in the fight against the virus.
CM Yogi announced that KGMU is now expanding its services beyond big cities. A satellite centre is coming up in Balrampur district. He said a full medical college is planned in Balrampur, starting from the next academic session. He also pointed out that KGMU had hired many new faculty members last year.

Focus on nursing and innovation

The Chief Minister said that nursing is the backbone of healthcare. Without good nurses, quality healthcare is not possible. He said the government is working to improve nursing education and timely recruitment. Yogi Adityanath also spoke about the new 'Med-Tech Programme' being developed in collaboration with IIT Kanpur. A Centre of Excellence in Medical Technology is also being set up. The aim is to connect this centre with top institutes like KGMU and SGPGI to develop new medical technologies.
CM Yogi praised PM Modi for increasing the number of AIIMS hospitals in the country. He said there was only one AIIMS till 1998, but now there are 23. These AIIMS centres are not just for treatment, but also focus on research and innovation. KGMU, he added, is also following this modern and progressive path.
Yogi Adityanath explained how there were only 17 government medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh until 2017. Out of these, 13 were run by the government, three were under public-private partnerships, and one was private. Under the "One District, One Medical College" plan, the government is building medical colleges in every district. This will make healthcare more accessible and also reduce the pressure on major institutions like KGMU.
The Chief Minister said 17 new medical colleges in the state started admitting undergraduate students last year. He highlighted major health improvements made in the last eight and a half years, such as dialysis and platelet treatment now being available in every district. He also mentioned that diseases like encephalitis no longer create fear among the people as they once did. This is due to increased awareness and better healthcare facilities.
Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak also spoke at the event. He said being part of KGMU — as a student, teacher, or staff member — is an honour. He reminded everyone that patients should be treated like God and should be cared for with full dedication and kindness.
Other important leaders present at the event included Medical Education Minister Mayankeshwar Sharan Singh, KGMU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sonia Nityanand, and Principal Secretary Parth Sarathi Sen Sharma. Faculty members, students, and staff of KGMU also attended the grand event, which marked another milestone in the university’s long journey of service.
