The Indian Army paid a heartfelt tribute to Captain Vikram Batra, the brave Kargil war hero, during a special event held at DAV College, Sector-10, Chandigarh on Monday, July 7, 2025. This commemorative ceremony marked the 26th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, which celebrates India’s victory in the 1999 Kargil War.

Captain Vikram Batra, who served in the 13 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles (13 JAK Rifles), lost his life during Operation Vijay on July 7, 1999. His fearless actions and ultimate sacrifice helped India regain key peaks captured by Pakistani intruders in the Kargil region. Today, he is remembered across the country as a symbol of courage, commitment, and patriotism.

The event in Chandigarh honoured not only the heroic soldier but also the sacrifice made by his family. His father, Girdhari Lal Batra, and twin brother, Vishal Batra, were present at the ceremony. They were felicitated with a memento and a letter of gratitude from the Indian Army, thanking them for their son’s supreme sacrifice.

The event was attended by Army officials, National Cadet Corps (NCC) members, college students, and faculty, all of whom came together to remember the legacy of one of India’s most loved war heroes.

‘Yeh Dil Maange More’ still echoes in hearts

The tribute began with Naib Subedar Ghanshyam Dass narrating the brave story of Captain Batra. He recalled how Batra’s bold leadership during the Kargil War helped recapture strategic peaks, especially Point 4875 in the Dras sector, where he displayed extreme courage under enemy fire.

Captain Batra’s famous words — “Yeh Dil Maange More” — became a national slogan after the war and are still deeply connected with his memory. These words were spoken after he led a successful mission to retake a critical mountain post from enemy control.

In a moving part of the event, a short film was shown on Captain Batra’s life, highlighting his journey from a young NCC cadet and college student to a decorated war hero who gave his life for the nation.

Brigadier VS Chauhan, Group Commander of NCC Chandigarh, addressed the gathering and urged the young cadets to take inspiration from Captain Batra’s life. “His courage, dedication, and ultimate sacrifice should guide every youth who wishes to serve the nation,” he said.

Brigadier Chauhan reminded the audience that Kargil Vijay Diwas is not just about remembering a victory, but about honouring every soldier who gave up their tomorrow for our today.

Mona Narang, Principal of DAV College, also shared her thoughts during the programme. She said the college felt immense pride in being the alma mater of Captain Batra. “His heroism and values continue to make this institution proud,” she added.

Family remembers a son, the nation remembers a hero

Captain Batra’s father, Girdhari Lal Batra, emotionally addressed the audience. He spoke about his son’s bravery and the sense of duty that defined his life. “Vikram’s love for the country was deep and unconditional,” he said. “Even today, his words, ‘Yeh Dil Maange More’, echo in the hearts of millions.”

He thanked the Indian Army and the college for keeping his son’s memory alive and called on the youth to serve the country with pride and honour, just as Vikram did.

His twin brother, Vishal Batra, who has played a key role in sharing Captain Batra’s story across the country, was also honoured at the event. Vishal has often said that though he lost a brother, the nation gained a hero.

This tribute was part of the Army’s broader initiative to connect with the families of martyrs and keep their memories alive. The Army wants to ensure that the sacrifices of its soldiers are never forgotten.

The event at DAV College in Chandigarh served as a powerful reminder of the heroism of Captain Vikram Batra. His fearless actions during the Kargil War, especially during Operation Vijay, earned him the nation’s highest wartime gallantry award — the Param Vir Chakra (PVC) — and a place in the hearts of all Indians.

Even after 26 years, his story continues to inspire new generations. Whether it is through school books, movies, or events like this one, Captain Batra’s legacy stands strong.

The Army’s tribute, the presence of his family, and the involvement of youth and cadets made the event deeply emotional and meaningful. It reminded everyone present that true heroes never die — their stories live on, lighting the path for future generations.

As the event came to an end, one thing was clear: Captain Vikram Batra’s name will forever be linked with the spirit of service, sacrifice, and the slogan — “Yeh Dil Maange More.”
