The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a major railway infrastructure project worth ₹1,264 crore aimed at improving connectivity and boosting economic activity between Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The project involves the construction of a third and fourth railway line on the important Bellary–Guntakal rail section, a key route that supports both passenger travel and freight movement.
The approval is part of the government's broader efforts to modernize transportation infrastructure under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan. The initiative focuses on improving connectivity across different modes of transport, reducing logistics costs and supporting economic growth through better planning and coordination.
Officials believe the project will significantly improve the movement of people, goods and services while helping industries, businesses and local communities benefit from faster and more efficient transportation.
The Bellary–Guntakal rail section is an important corridor connecting industrial and commercial regions in southern India. With increasing passenger and freight traffic on this route, the need for additional rail capacity has become more urgent in recent years.
The newly approved project aims to address this challenge by adding third and fourth railway lines to the existing network. These additional tracks will help reduce congestion, improve train punctuality and allow more trains to operate on the route.
According to government information, the project will span three districts across Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Once completed, it will add approximately 46 kilometers to the existing Indian Railways network.
One of the key benefits of the project is its impact on rural and semi-urban communities. Around 99 villages with a combined population of nearly seven lakh people are expected to benefit from improved rail connectivity.
Better railway infrastructure often creates new opportunities for local residents by improving access to jobs, education, healthcare and markets. Farmers, small business owners and traders can also benefit from more efficient transportation systems that make it easier to move products across regions.
The project is being developed under the PM Gati Shakti framework, which emphasizes integrated planning among various government departments and stakeholders. The goal is to ensure that infrastructure projects are designed in a coordinated manner, maximizing efficiency and minimizing delays.
Improved rail capacity is also expected to strengthen logistics networks. Freight trains carrying industrial goods, raw materials and agricultural products will be able to move more smoothly, reducing transportation bottlenecks and improving supply chain efficiency.
Experts often point out that efficient railway networks play a critical role in economic development. By reducing travel time and transportation costs, such projects can help industries become more competitive and attract additional investments to the region.
The Andhra Pradesh–Karnataka corridor is already an important economic zone, and the expansion is expected to support future growth by creating a stronger transportation backbone.
In addition to economic benefits, the project may also contribute to environmental sustainability. Rail transport is generally considered more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly compared to road transport, particularly for moving large volumes of freight over long distances.
As India continues to invest in infrastructure modernization, projects like this are seen as crucial for meeting growing transportation demands while supporting long-term development goals.

Apart from improving transportation and logistics, the project is expected to enhance connectivity to several important tourist destinations in the region.
Government officials noted that better rail services will make it easier for travelers to visit attractions such as Ballari Fort and the Sri Kumara Swamy Temple. Improved access could help increase tourism activity, benefiting local businesses, hotels, restaurants and other service providers.
Tourism plays an important role in regional economies, and better transportation infrastructure often encourages more visitors to explore cultural, historical and religious sites.
The rail expansion announcement came alongside several other infrastructure-related developments approved by the Cabinet.
One notable decision was the approval of the Bharat Audyogik Vikas Yojana Rasayan, or BHAVYA-Rasayan Scheme. The scheme aims to establish three chemical parks across the country with a total government outlay of ₹3,030 crore.
According to the government, ₹3,000 crore of the allocation will be used for creating common infrastructure facilities and basic utilities within the parks. The remaining ₹30 crore has been earmarked for administrative expenses.
The scheme is planned for a five-year period and will run until the financial year 2030-31.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw explained that the chemical industry is a foundational sector that supports numerous other industries by supplying essential raw materials.
The government expects that the establishment of chemical parks will attract substantial private investment and strengthen India's manufacturing ecosystem.
Under the scheme, the central government will provide grants of up to ₹1,000 crore for each chemical park. However, participating state governments will need to contribute at least ₹500 crore toward the projects.
The objective is to create world-class industrial infrastructure that can support growth, innovation and employment generation in the chemical sector.
Meanwhile, Indian Railways has also introduced a new application called Punctuality BZA. The app has been designed to monitor train punctuality and track delays of more than 15 minutes.
Railway officials hope that digital tools like this will improve operational efficiency and help authorities identify and address service issues more effectively.
Together, the rail expansion project, chemical park initiative and digital railway monitoring efforts reflect the government's focus on strengthening infrastructure, supporting industrial growth and improving public services.
