Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the Haryana section of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway, a major infrastructure project that is expected to transform road travel across North India. The expressway will make journeys faster, improve connectivity between key cities, reduce traffic congestion and provide a major boost to tourism, trade and economic development.
The project is particularly important for pilgrims travelling to the revered Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir. Once the entire expressway becomes operational, the travel time from Delhi to Katra is expected to reduce dramatically, making the pilgrimage much more convenient for millions of devotees every year.
The Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway is one of India's largest road infrastructure projects and is designed to strengthen transportation links between Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir. The expressway is expected to play a key role in supporting regional growth while improving travel comfort and safety.
During the inauguration ceremony held in Jind, Haryana, Prime Minister Modi opened a 157.92-kilometre-long section of the expressway. This newly inaugurated stretch is a four-lane, fully access-controlled corridor and has been built at an estimated cost of around Rs 9,680 crore.
The section forms an important part of the larger 667-kilometre Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway project, which is being developed to provide seamless and high-speed connectivity across several northern states.
According to information shared by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), the expressway will significantly reduce travel times once the entire route is completed.
At present, travelling by road from Delhi to Katra generally takes around 14 hours. After the full completion of the expressway, this journey is expected to take only about six hours. This reduction in travel time will be especially beneficial for pilgrims heading to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, one of the most visited religious destinations in the country.
Similarly, the road journey between Delhi and Amritsar is expected to become much shorter. Travel time on this route is projected to reduce from nearly eight hours to approximately four hours, making travel easier for tourists, business travellers and local residents.
The expressway has been developed as a greenfield project, meaning it has been built on a completely new route rather than by upgrading an existing highway. This allows for smoother traffic movement, higher speed limits and improved road safety.
Officials believe the project will become a crucial transportation corridor that supports economic activity and strengthens connections between major urban centres and smaller towns across the region.
Another major advantage of the expressway is the relief it is expected to provide to National Highway 44, one of the busiest highways in India. Heavy traffic on NH-44 often leads to congestion, delays and longer travel times.
With a new alternative route available, a significant portion of long-distance traffic is likely to shift to the expressway, reducing pressure on the existing highway network and improving overall traffic flow.

Beyond reducing travel time, the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway is expected to create substantial economic opportunities across the regions it passes through.

Businesses will benefit from faster transportation of goods, lower logistics costs and improved access to markets.

Tourism is another sector expected to benefit greatly. Easier access to destinations such as Amritsar and Katra could encourage more domestic and international visitors. The reduced travel time may make weekend and short-duration trips more attractive, increasing tourism-related spending and supporting local businesses.
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for several other development projects across Haryana, Punjab and Chandigarh. These projects covered important sectors including transportation, healthcare, education and railways.
One of the highlights of the event was the launch of India's first hydrogen-powered train. The introduction of the train marks a significant milestone for the country's railway sector and reflects India's growing focus on sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation solutions.
Hydrogen-powered trains produce significantly lower emissions compared to traditional diesel-powered trains and are considered an important step toward cleaner mobility. With this launch, India joins a select group of countries that have operational hydrogen train services.
Apart from the hydrogen train, the Prime Minister also dedicated several highway projects, medical colleges and railway stations developed under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. These projects are aimed at improving public infrastructure and enhancing the quality of services available to citizens.
The inauguration of the Haryana section of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway represents another important step in India's efforts to modernise its transportation network. By reducing travel times, easing congestion and creating new economic opportunities, the project is expected to deliver long-term benefits for millions of people.
