Bangladesh has expressed disappointment over India’s explanation about an airport incident involving one of its senior officials. The issue is related to Zahed Ur Rahman, an adviser to Bangladesh Prime Minister for Information and Strategy, who was briefly stopped at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport earlier this month.
Bangladesh has called India’s explanation “unsatisfactory” and said the incident was “unfortunate and regrettable.” The matter has created fresh tension between the two neighbouring countries, as both sides have given different versions of what happened.
The incident took place when Rahman arrived in India to attend an important regional meeting. He was expected to lead Bangladesh’s delegation at the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) meeting in New Delhi. However, he was stopped by Indian immigration officials and was unable to continue his visit as planned.
Bangladesh says Indian authorities had already been informed in advance about Rahman’s visit through official diplomatic channels. This is why Dhaka believes the situation should have been handled differently.
The issue has now become a diplomatic matter, with both countries sharing their own explanations and raising questions over the treatment of senior officials.
According to Bangladesh’s foreign ministry, Zahed Ur Rahman reached Delhi airport on June 14 to attend the 28th meeting of senior officials of the Indian Ocean Rim Association. He was carrying a private passport and a SAARC visa.
Bangladesh says his travel details and official role had been communicated to India before the trip. Despite this, he was stopped by immigration officers at the airport.
Reports suggest that Rahman’s name may have appeared on a security watchlist, which led to questioning by Indian authorities.
Bangladesh says the stop caused embarrassment and disrupted his official schedule. Because of this delay and uncertainty, Rahman could not continue his visit and later returned to Dhaka.
The Bangladesh government strongly protested the matter and asked India for an explanation.
India, however, gave a different version. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said Rahman was not detained but only questioned for verification.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Rahman was allowed to enter India after officials confirmed the purpose of his visit. According to India, Rahman then chose to return to Bangladesh on his own.
This difference in accounts has become the main point of disagreement.
Bangladesh believes that if India already knew about his visit, such questioning should not have happened. The country feels the explanation does not fully address its concerns.

Still, the fact that the adviser returned to Dhaka without attending the meeting has made the issue more serious.

India has defended its actions by saying that Rahman was cleared after verification and was free to continue his journey.
The truth of what exactly happened may remain a matter of interpretation. But what is clear is that the event has raised concerns about diplomatic communication and airport procedures.
